PROVERBS 22 - A Good Name

This Proverb starts with: "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold." This is the opposite of the world today where men seemed to be valued for their wealth. When is the last time you saw a list of "Ten Most Honorable Men"? How many politicians are honorable men? How many businessmen are honorable men? Put a high value on your name, on your character. Verse 2 continues to let us know that God made all of us. Whether rich or poor, our name, our character was a clean slate at the time of our birth.
"Train a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not turn from it."

That is our responsibility as parents and adults to all children. Children first learn from their parents and then from the world which is tarnished. If the parents, grandparents, and their friends are behaving ungodly, who will teach the child? Surround your child with godly people, so that they can become prudent men and women. For Proverbs 5 says, "In the paths of the wicked lie thorns and snares, but he who guards his soul stays far from them." Have you ever thought about how to guard your soul?

4 "Humility and fear of the Lord bring wealth and honor and life."

Humility is recognizing our dependence on God; He is in charge. Humility is also to recognize that every other person was also created by God; we must treat others as children of God. Fear is to respect Him by our actions and our words. Think about it "humility" and "fear" bring wealth, honor , and life!

12 "The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge".

"Knowledge" refers to those who have knowledge, those who live right and speak the truth. It takes discipline, determination, and hard work to live God's way, but God protects and rewards those who make the commitment to follow Him. (Application Bible)

Our Prayer

May God protect you and I as we guard our souls from sinful temptation, so that our names may be honorable among men.
This we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.
